Retired Teacher's Gun Culture Program Leaves Lasting Impact

John Annoni, a recently retired elementary school teacher from Allentown, Penn., has left an indelible mark on the community through his afterschool program, Camp Compass Academy. Founded in 1994, the program has been credited by former students as a key factor in their success, with many attributing their achievements to Annoni's guidance.

Annoni's warmth and genuine smile initially drew students to him at his elementary school. However, it was his unique approach to teaching life skills through gun culture that truly set his program apart. By incorporating hunting and gun safety into his curriculum, Annoni taught kids individual responsibility, accountability, and the value of delayed gratification in pursuit of long-term goals.

The program, which began within the school, later moved to a nearby carpet store due to school officials' concerns about gun-training and hunting activities. Despite the change in location, Annoni's dedication to the students remained unwavering. The National Rifle Association (NRA) recognized Annoni's work and provided grant money to his nonprofit, further enabling him to expand his impact.

Today, Camp Compass Academy continues to operate under Annoni's guidance, even after his retirement from teaching last June. The program has received financial support from the NRA Foundation in recent years, allowing Annoni to establish Camp Compass Academy in other neighborhoods across the country. More information about the program can be found at campcompass.com. Annoni's legacy in Allentown serves as a testament to the power of dedication, innovation, and genuine care for one's students.
