Brandenburg Parents' Council Questions Necessity of SchoolMobile Phone Ban

Potsdam - The Brandenburg State Parents' Council has raised doubts about the necessity of the planned ban on mobile phones in primary and secondary schools, advocating for individual school decisions, a spokesperson stated. The proposed regulation by the Ministry of Education, according to which private digital devices must be switched off during lessons, is not deemed essential by the parent's council, they argue, with more pressing education issues requiring attention.

From next school year, mobile phones and tablets will have to be switched off and stored during classes for grades one to six in both primary and secondary schools across Brandenburg. This regulation mirrors similar measures in several other German states, such as Bremen, Hesse, and Saarland. In Bremen, for instance, the policy has already been enforced for primary and secondary schools up to grade 10 since June 1.

While some German states favor restrictions on private mobile phone use in schools, the stance of the Brandenburg State Parents' Council on this specific issue remains unclear. The ongoing debate reflects the broader national discourse, with opinions split between supporting students' concentration and well-being through bans, and prioritizing digital education and responsible use.

Recent reports indicate a trend towards mobile phone bans in European schools, driven by concerns over digital distraction, screen addiction, and the potential long-term social and psychological harms of excessive smartphone use among minors. As the issue garners increased attention, various countries have implemented school-wide restrictions during school hours. Germany's approach to educational policy is determined at the state level, allowing for differences in regulations across its federal states.

  1. The Brandenburg State Parents' Council has expressed differing opinions on the mobile phone ban in schools, contrasting with states like Bremen, Hesse, and Saarland that have already enforced such bans.
  2. Amidst the national discourse on the issue, the Brandenburg State Parents' Council, while deliberating on the necessity of a school mobile phone ban, also emphasizes the importance of education-and-self-development, politics, and general-news issues that require attention.
