Elsbeth Stern, a renowned professor of educational research at ETH Zurich, graces the stern podcast "The Brainy Boss" alongside host Simone Menne. This insightful discussion dives into the definition of intelligence and Stern's stance on emotional and social competence in intelligence testing.

In "The Brainy Boss," top female leaders gather to share their career experiences. Host Simone Menne, a powerhouse influencer in BMW, Deutsche Post DHL, and Henkel, invites CEOs from various fields to delve into their lives and careers. Episodes are released every 14 days on stern.de, RTL, and major podcast platforms.

Stern, a pioneer in her field, explains that her research focuses on cognitive intelligence rather than social or emotional competence. "I cringe when people talk about social or emotional intelligence because the measuring instruments in these areas just don't have the same quality as the instruments we use for intelligence tests," she noted. "We can't capture emotional and social competencies with the same statistical measures as we can with cognitive ability."

How Intelligence Distributes

Stern reveals that about 70% of people have an average level of cognitive intelligence. The remaining 30% consists of individuals above and below the average. If we examine the distribution of intelligence between the sexes, she points out that, on average, there are no differences. However, research does reveal differences at the extremes: there are more men in the lower and upper ranges. It's essential to understand, nevertheless, that women are still present in the highest intelligence tiers.

Grammar School Perversion?

When queried about the parents' desire to label their child as highly intelligent to gain access to grammar school, Stern responds, "Well, since intelligence is normally distributed, it's almost like a twisted mentality to suggest that half of the students should attend grammar school, considering that you're also manipulating the average where the largest concentration is found."

The scientist further delves into the role of universities, teachers, and parents and shares insights on what happens when your boss is less intelligent than you in the new episode of "The Brainy Boss - Power is Female."
