You'd think knife violence is running rampant in Saxon schools, but that's far from the truth. Fortunately, knife attacks are exceedingly scarce, assures the Ministry of Culture. Although there are reports of students hauling knives at school and flashing them around, these instances are few and far between, and threats crop up occasionally. But fear not, no specific region seems to be suffering more than the others.
In the first threat this school year
Contrary to popular belief, there hasn't been a spike in such incidents. This academic year, only one event has taken place thus far. On March 16, an upper school student in Aue brandished a knife against a classmate. Fortunately, no one ended up hurt.
It's a no-knives zone at Saxon schools, with no dedicated programs for knife handling. However, numerous initiatives focus on just that— preventing violence in general.
Rising knife attacks nationwide
Recent years have seen an increase in knife attacks across Germany. Last year in Saxony alone, around 1,400 incidents were reported according to the police crime statistics, up by 20% from 2020. Nearly a third of the suspects were kids, teens, or young adults.
A knife attack shocker in Berlin
A life-threatening knife attack took place at a Berlin primary school, leaving a 12-year-old student in critical condition and in need of surgery. The 13-year-old perpetrator responsible for the attack won't face punishment due to his age. The police investigation is ongoing, but the motive behind the attack remains unclear.
Throughout the rest of Germany, knife attacks have become worryingly common. Recently, a mass stabbing occurred at Hamburg's central train station, resulting in 17 injuries, six of which were life-threatening. The suspect was a 39-year-old woman who had been released from a psychiatric hospital just before the attack.
Amid mounting youth crime concerns, a CDU politician has proposed monitoring and data storage on minors under 14 to address the issue.
