Spike Lee & Denzel Washington Team Up Again in 'Highest 2 Lowest'

Spike Lee and Denzel Washington have teamed up once again for 'Highest 2 Lowest', a modern take on Akira Kurosawa's 'High and Low'. The film, an Apple Original, premiered at Cannes and is now streaming on Apple TV+.

Lee's signature style, heavily influenced by jazz, shines through with spontaneous dialogue and sharp tonal shifts. The story centres around a powerful record executive, played by Washington, grappling with a personal crisis. Washington personally sought out Lee to work on the film after reading the script. The film features improvised moments, including a memorable scene where Washington interacts with portraits of musical legends Aretha Franklin and James Brown.

Critics at Cannes offered mixed reviews. Some lauded the film's emotional and cultural depth, while others found issues with pacing and tonal consistency.

'Highest 2 Lowest' is now available globally on Apple TV+, adding to the platform's growing film slate. Lee, who considers Washington 'the greatest living actor', has once again shown his ability to draw powerful performances from his leading man.
