In the heart of Germany, the city of Solingen has embarked on an ambitious swimming program aimed at enhancing the water skills and safety knowledge of its young citizens. The initiative, which culminated in the achievement of the 'Seepferdchen' swimming badges by nearly 250 students, is a significant step towards improving water safety among the city's youth.

The 'Seepferdchen' badge, the first official swimming badge in Germany, signifies basic swimming ability and water confidence. This program, which has been in the works since January of the previous year, is a collaborative effort involving primary schools, the city sports association, the baths company, and Solingen's specialist administration.

Birgit Evertz, a long-standing figure in Solingen's sports politics, expressed her joy at the children's water play and her ambition to instill the joy of water movement in as many Solingen children as possible. Leon Kröck, the sports spokesman for the Green Party's city council faction, also expressed satisfaction with the program's success.

The high number of children who can't swim safely is a concern for the city's sports politicians. They view swimming not just as a source of fun and exercise, but also as a means to promote health and safety. For this reason, it's crucial that children learn to handle water safely. The 'Seepferdchen' badge is seen as a stepping stone towards learning safe swimming.

The achievement occurred during the week before the Easter holidays, and the national funding program contributed to the success. Extra funds for swimming assistants have been allocated in the 2025/2026 double budget to ensure the continuation of this important initiative.

This program is a testament to Solingen's commitment to the safety and well-being of its young citizens. By promoting early water competence, Solingen is setting a positive example for other cities to follow, fostering a culture of water safety and confidence among its youth.
