Strain in Thai Border Tourism Sector Approaching Ruin due to Mass Tour Cancellations Triggered by Cambodia Conflict

The escalating tensions between Thailand and Cambodia along their shared border have taken a toll on the tourism industry in several Thai provinces, particularly those bordering Cambodia.

According to a survey conducted by the Thai Hotel Association on 30 July 2025, a total of 1,881 hotel bookings were cancelled directly due to the border situation. The surveyed hotels in Bangkok recorded 330 cancellations, while coastal Rayong province saw 87 cancellations, none of which were attributed to border tensions.

However, the impact has been more severe in other provinces. Sa Kaeo province, which shares a border with Cambodia, has experienced the most severe impact, with 100% cancellation or postponement rates in Aranyaprathet district. Ubon Ratchathani province has seen 100% cancellation of tour group accommodations, but has a 70% occupancy rate from donors and media personnel covering the crisis. Sisaket province faces complete tour group cancellation, and Buriram has lost approximately 70% of its hotel bookings.

Nakhon Ratchasima recorded 308 total cancellations but gained over 1,600 new bookings, indicating a shift in tourist behaviour away from the border areas. Chanthaburi province, the closest to the conflict zone, suffered complete border-related cancellations totalling 334 room nights with only 76 new bookings. Trat province has seen complete cancellations in all border-adjacent areas.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has established tourist assistance centres in affected provinces (Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sa Kaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat) with special security measures. Major tourist attractions have closed entirely, including the historic Phanom Rung temple complex, and Chang International Circuit has postponed all scheduled racing events.

The popular island destinations have also suffered significant losses. Phuket experienced 503 cancellations overall, with only 63 related to the conflict, whilst securing 877 new bookings. Ko Chang, Ko Mak, and Ko Kood have experienced cancellations ranging from 10-60%.

TAT Governor Thapanee Kiatphaibool stated that the escalating border tensions have created deep uncertainty among tourists, causing them to avoid or cancel planned trips to affected regions.

The governments of Thailand and Cambodia, under intense regional and international pressure, have engaged in diplomatic efforts to broker ceasefires. Notably, a ceasefire was declared during talks in Kuala Lumpur on July 28, 2025; however, clashes resumed soon after, demonstrating the fragile nature of peace efforts. ASEAN continues to push for stabilizing the border through diplomatic channels, emphasizing monitoring mechanisms and stronger leadership to prevent further escalation, which indirectly supports restoring safe tourism.

The tourism crisis represents a significant economic blow to Thailand's border regions that have historically relied on cross-border trade and cultural tourism. The governments are responding with a combination of military control, diplomatic negotiation, and regional cooperation to restore peace and eventually rehabilitate affected areas, but the situation remains volatile as of early August 2025.
