Strategic Guide for Protesters: Leveraging Data in Activism Movements

The Rebel's Notebook cast, a groundbreaking data-driven tool for activists, is currently in an open alpha stage. Created by Jasper, a teacher in digital design and social design at the University of Applied Sciences in Utrecht, this innovative tool is designed to help activists, trainers, and rebels make informed decisions about nonviolent action. Built on the Global Nonviolent Action Database (GNAD) from Swarthmore College, The Rebel's Notebook offers recommendations based on 198 methods of nonviolent action, grouped into three categories: Protest and Persuasion, Noncooperation, and Nonviolent Intervention. It scores methods based on the situation, timing, and synergy with other tactics, providing transparency in its recommendations by explaining historical data, synergy score, and phase suitability. The tool is not intended to replace judgment but to provide data to make judgments more powerful. It combines historical data, community feedback, and personal experiences to improve its recommendations. One of its key features is the Methods Library, which is based on Gene Sharp's 198 Methods of Nonviolent Action. In addition to the Methods Library, The Rebel's Notebook provides a Basic Recommender and a Campaign Planner. The Basic Recommender offers suggestions based on the user's current situation, while the Campaign Planner allows users to start with a Strategic Archetype and offers an interactive ripple effect feature. The Campaign Planner also provides a variety of resources for campaign strategy, including manuals, templates, tools, and video series. These resources aim to help activists plan and execute effective nonviolent campaigns. Recent research, such as Erica Chenoweth's work on the 3.5% rule and civil resistance, focusing on nonviolent mass mobilizations, highlights the importance of strategic planning in successful activism. The Rebel's Notebook is a valuable resource in this regard, offering activists a data-driven tool to guide their strategies. Moreover, new research is considering Australian climate activism and its effectiveness. As activism continues to play a crucial role in shaping the future, tools like The Rebel's Notebook are essential in equipping activists with the knowledge and resources they need to make a difference. For more information about The Rebel's Notebook, contact Jasper on LinkedIn. The tool is a testament to Jasper's commitment to helping designers understand their impact on the world, as he holds a master's degree in Data Driven Design. The Rebel's Notebook is currently inviting activists, trainers, and rebels to use, test, and improve it, making it an exciting development in the world of activism.
