Struggling learners confront the significant burden of resuming college attendance at Utah Valley University
UVU reopened its doors this week, following a tragic shooting incident that took place on campus last week. The shooting claimed the life of student Charlie Kirk, and the campus community is still reeling from the loss.
Increased security presence was visible on campus on Tuesday, with both UVU and Orem officers patrolling the grounds. This heightened security will continue throughout the semester, according to university officials.
The site where Kirk was shot and killed is now marked by a solemn presence. Concrete bricks cover the area, serving as a stark reminder of the violence that occurred. Community member Ethan Nielson noted a reverent atmosphere as people gathered in quiet reflection at the site.
Kaitlyn Allen, a senior at UVU, finds it difficult to return to campus due to the emotional toll of the shooting. Hallie Landingin, a UVU sophomore, returned to campus for the first time since the shooting and is still carrying bruises from the incident. Landingin was on the second or third row, standing on the corner and edge, when she witnessed the shooting.
UVU has planned a Vigil for Unity on Friday afternoon for students and faculty to honor Charlie Kirk's memory and reflect on the impact of the tragedy. People are reflecting on themselves, the country, and Charlie Kirk's life at the site of the shooting.
In the aftermath of the shooting, UVU students have been attending vigils and connecting with loved ones. A victim services center has been created for the UVU campus community to provide support and resources during this difficult time.
Landingin feels ready to return to campus after processing the incident and hopes for increased safety measures. "I hope that this tragedy will lead to positive changes and improvements in campus safety," she said.
The Vigil for Unity takes place on September 23, 2025, and is an opportunity for the UVU community to come together and show their support for each other during this challenging time.
