Student Breaches College System, Exposing Data of 9,000 Individuals

A student has breached a college information system, exposing data on 9,000 individuals. This incident follows a trend of student-led cyber incidents in UK schools, with teenagers accounting for 97% of such breaches involving stolen login credentials.

The breach, which occurred at a college, saw a student gain unauthorized access to data on 9,000 staff members, students, and applicants. This follows a pattern of students exploiting staff mistakes, such as leaving devices unlocked or improperly configuring access rights, to gain entry to school systems.

In another incident, three Year 11 students hacked into a school information system using online hacking tools, compromising data on over 1,400 students. The reasons behind these hacks vary, from dares and notoriety to financial gain, revenge, or rivalry.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has urged schools to refresh GDPR training, tighten access controls, and report breaches quickly. Between 2022 and 2024, more than half of all insider-led school data breaches were caused by students, highlighting the need for robust cybersecurity measures and awareness among both staff and students.
