Taiwan's Native Languages Connect the World: 28 Courses Launch Next Month
Taiwan's linguistic diversity is set to connect the international community with contemporary Taiwan. An online learning platform, a result of collaboration between Taiwanese universities and the Institut National des Langues et Civilisations Orientales' Taiwan Studies Program, will offer 28 courses on native Taiwanese languages starting next month. Most students, numbering 465, are from European nations.
The platform aims to teach foreigners about Taiwan and train Taiwanese language teachers for foreigners. Courses cover Hoklo, Taiwanese Hakka, Taiwanese indigenous languages, and Taiwanese Mandarin. Hoklo courses received the most sign-ups with 223 students, followed by Taiwanese indigenous language courses with 120 students. Students expect to learn more about Taiwan and its culture through language learning. Taiwan's experience in language revival can be shared with the world. Government support is urged to boost the external development of Taiwan's languages.
