Teacher on Leave After Alleged Racist Image Shared in Group Chat
An elementary school teacher in Long Beach, John Solomon, has been placed on administrative leave following public outcry over an allegedly racist image he shared in a group chat. California State Sen. Lena Gonzalez has called for a thorough investigation by the school district.
The image, which depicted a children's ankle monitor on a Black child with a derogatory joke, sparked outrage among parents, students, and local officials. Long Beach Mayor Rex Richardson and other elected officials have condemned Solomon's actions. The Long Beach Unified School District, which does not condone such conduct, has placed Solomon on leave while they investigate the matter.
Solomon, who has denied sending the image, claiming his phone was hacked, has not had his employment duration with the district revealed. Teachers within the district have started a recall campaign to remove Solomon from his position as a union member. The person associated with the allegedly shared image, Wanda Garges, is also a teacher at MacArthur Elementary School.
The district's investigation into the incident is ongoing. If Solomon is found to have shared the image, he could face severe consequences, including termination. The district's swift action in placing Solomon on leave and the public's strong reaction reflect the community's commitment to maintaining a safe and inclusive learning environment.
