Temporary 'School Streets' Boost Children's Safety During European Mobility Week
Initiatives are underway to enhance children's safety during their school commutes. During this year's European Mobility Week, a focus is on school mobility management, with 'school streets' being introduced to restrict motorized vehicles at specific times. A joint press conference was held on 18.09. to discuss these measures.
From 16.09. to 22.09., a 'temporary school street' will be established at the Elisabethschule in Luenen-Brambauer. During this period, motorized vehicles will be banned between 07:15-08:15 and 15:00-16:00. Police officers will be carrying out checks and sensitizing parents about the dangers of 'parent taxis'. Exceptions to the driving ban include emergency vehicles, residents, and delivery vehicles. Jolanta Bialas, head of the Traffic Department, encourages parents to use parent drop-off points or walk with their children to promote traffic competence and safety. Luenen has been selected for a pilot project to implement such measures.
The introduction of 'temporary school streets' aims to create a safer environment for children by eliminating traffic, parked vehicles, and dangerous maneuvers near schools. These initiatives are part of the broader goal to promote the independent mobility of children and young people during this year's European Mobility Week.
