New and Improved Streichelzoo in Moers to Open in May 2025

The beloved Streichelzoo in Moers, Germany, is undergoing a significant transformation, with the animals set to return to their new home starting from or around May 2025.

The project, which is being supported by ENNI and the Streichelzoo Support Association with dedication and donations, includes a complete overhaul of the outdoor areas and the refurbishment of the Japanese garden. The familiar stalls will be dismantled and rebuilt at the new location.

In mid-August, the animals will move to their new accommodations. Two experienced farmers will take care of them during this transition period. Pigs, however, will not be present in the new Streichelzoo due to cost reasons.

After the animals' departure, the old buildings and toilet facilities will be demolished. The new toilets, which will be barrier-free, are part of the comprehensive renovation.

The construction road will run through the adjacent new development area via Dr.-Karl-Hirschberg-Straße. The new Streichelzoo will be more beautiful, varied, and better tailored to families, offering a place for education, training, and social interaction.

The total costs of the project are approximately 3.4 million euros, with 80% covered by federal and state urban development funding. The City of Moers' Freiraum- and Environmental Planning Department and the Streichelzoo Support Association will maintain close contact with the farmers and animals during the construction phase.

The first educational offers at the new Streichelzoo are expected to start in summer 2027. More animals, including alpacas, sheep, goats, rabbits, budgerigars, chickens, and guinea pigs, will call the zoo home.

Construction of the new Streichelzoo begins at the end of summer vacation (August). The animals are scheduled to return to the new Streichelzoo in spring 2027. While the exact date of their return is not yet confirmed, visitors can look forward to a revitalised and family-friendly Streichelzoo in the near future.

While the new Streichelzoo, set to open in May 2025, focuses on family-friendly amenities, it also includes areas dedicated to learning and self-development, such as education-and-self-development workshops for visitors. The home-and-garden section will also be expanded, as the renovation project includes a refurbished home-and-garden space and a diverse range of other animals, including alpacas, sheep, and goats, providing opportunities for other lifestyle exploration.
