Trial Begins for Coach Accused of Sexual Assault of Student
The trial of Robert Luu began last week, with his colleague Charles-Xavier Boislard having already pleaded guilty to similar charges. Luu is accused of sexually assaulting Daniella, a former student, between 2014 and 2017 when he was her basketball coach and hallway supervisor at Saint-Laurent High School. The trial is being presided over by Judge Patricia Compagnone, with Sharon Sandiford defending the accused.
Daniella testified that she had a 'boyfriend' relationship with Luu when she was in 2nd and 3rd grade, with numerous sexual relations. Luu admitted to having numerous inappropriate conversations with Daniella over several years. One such conversation occurred at midnight when Daniella expressed discomfort, with Luu sending her a message asking if she had fallen in love with him.
Luu was affiliated with the Lester B. Pearson School Board in Montreal when he drove the 12-year-old Daniella to her physiotherapy appointments. However, Luu denies having sexual relations with Daniella, describing their relationship as 'big brother, little sister'. He acknowledged crossing boundaries in conversations with Daniella, such as speaking ill of others and sending inappropriate content. Daniella's friend caught Luu in her room, which he denied, claiming he was invited for dinner by Daniella's mother.
The trial continues with Luu denying the sexual assault charges. Daniella's testimony and Luu's admissions of inappropriate conversations will be key points in the ongoing case.
