Turkey positions itself as a digital link connecting continents post-energy scene
Turkey's Digital Ambitions Take Shape
Turkey is positioning itself as a strategic digital bridge between Europe and Asia, mirroring its historical role as an energy transit corridor. This initiative focuses on building extensive digital infrastructure to facilitate fast and secure data flow across continents, enhancing Turkey's geopolitical influence in the digital economy.
At the heart of this digital transformation is Türk Telekom, a Turkish telecommunications company. The company operates a 50,000-kilometer fiber network, multiple submarine cable systems, and a large-scale international partner network exceeding 200 partners. Its Hungary-based subsidiary, TT International, extends this digital bridge with operations across 24 countries and 135 digital access points connecting Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
According to Türk Telekom's CEO Ümit Önal, these investments aim to turn Turkey’s geographic advantage into a competitive edge in the digital era, driving both national digital transformation and Turkey’s elevation to digital global prominence. The company is a pioneer in 5G infrastructure, having already connected 54% of its LTE base stations to fiber.
Meanwhile, TGS Dış Ticaret, one of Türkiye's leading foreign trade companies, has recently seen a significant change. RePie Investment Holding has acquired a 42.24% stake in the company in a strategic transaction valued at $19 million. This acquisition aims to expand TGS Dış Ticaret's product and service portfolio and grow its customer base. The transaction strengthens RePie's presence in Türkiye's foreign trade ecosystem, positioning it as a major stakeholder in one of the country's top-performing export firms.
Elsewhere, the digital landscape is not without its challenges. A major security breach at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has occurred, potentially affecting the development and production of next-generation 2-nanometer chips. This breach could lead to delays in the rollout of groundbreaking advancements in fields such as artificial intelligence, mobile devices, gaming, and autonomous vehicles.
On a more positive note, conservationists are finding new ways to leverage technology for nature conservation. Amazon Web Services (AWS) is helping transform environmental data into actionable insights for nature conservation. For instance, Clay AI for Earth has developed the Earth Observation Foundation Model using open-access datasets from AWS. This model makes satellite imagery accessible for innovative environmental solutions, helping monitor changes in forest cover, detect illegal fishing activities, and introduce transparency in agriculture and aquaculture.
As Turkey continues to build its digital infrastructure and other countries navigate the challenges and opportunities of the digital age, one thing is clear: the digital landscape is rapidly evolving, and countries that invest in digital infrastructure stand to reap significant benefits.
