UK and Kazakhstan Strengthen Strategic Alliance in Crucial Areas

Deputy Foreign Minister Alibek Kuantyrov led Kazakhstan's delegation, while Douglas Alexander, Minister of State for Trade Policy and Economic Security at the Department for Business and Trade, represented the UK. According to the Kazakh Foreign Ministry's press service, the UK is one of Kazakhstan's top trading partners and key investors, with total foreign direct investments surpassing an impressive $22 billion.
Kuantyrov emphasized the importance of the UK's role in Kazakhstan's development, stating that they welcome an advanced partnership centered on investment, technology, and knowledge transfer.
Several key documents were signed during the meeting, including the Protocol of the Intergovernmental Commission, a Roadmap for cooperation in agriculture, as well as memorandums on collaboration in water resource management and the localization of biopharmaceuticals in Kazakhstan in partnership with AstraZeneca.
AstraZeneca's focus on Kazakhstan's healthcare sector has been significant, investing over 3.5 billion tenge (US$6.7 million) since 2022. Beginning this month, they plan to launch contract manufacturing of their original drugs in Kazakhstan.
For the first time in their bilateral history, the Kazakh delegation visited the Discovery Centre (DISC), the largest research and innovation center of AstraZeneca, in Cambridge. The visit centered around exploring best practices in scientific innovation, drug development, and clinical trials.
