University of Hamburg to Open €17M Guest House for International Academics in 2024

The University of Hamburg is set to open a new guest house in 2024, catering to international PhD students, visiting researchers, and newly appointed foreign academics. The building, estimated to cost around 17 million euros, will blend into its neighborhood with a red brick facade and stepped design, and will feature 63 apartments over eight floors.

The guest house will be centrally located near the university campus and the city center. It will offer 1- to 3-room apartments and numerous common areas for scientific exchange. Science Senator Katharina Fegebank highlighted the international appeal of the science location Hamburg, which has seen increased demand for temporary housing due to the university's excellence status, as noted by Prof. Dr. Hauke Heekeren, President of the University of Hamburg.

The construction of the guest house is a result of cooperation between multiple institutions. The City of Hamburg, led by financial senator Andreas Dressel, and the construction company Sprinkenhof are among the partners involved in the financing, though the exact details of additional financing actors were not clearly specified.

The new guest house, with its 63 apartments on roughly 3,600 square meters, will provide a welcoming space for international academics to live and collaborate. Its construction reflects the university's commitment to fostering a vibrant international research community.
