University of Park to Organize Peace Discussion
In the era of digital information, maintaining the integrity of facts and fostering public trust is more crucial than ever. On November 9, 2022, Park University and the Centre for Global Peace Journalism (CGPJ) will join forces to present a compelling event, "Combating Misinformation: Tools and Techniques," at the McCoy Meetin' House on Park University's flagship Parkville Campus. This free and open-to-the-public event, part of the annual Greater Kansas City Peacebuilding Conference, will run from noon to 1:15 p.m.
The event will feature a trio of speakers discussing misinformation and its impact on both academia and professional journalism. Derek Donovan, community engagement editor at The Kansas City Star, will shed light on misinformation and the role of professional journalism in maintaining the truth. Steven Youngblood, the founding director of the CGPJ and an associate professor of communication arts at Park University, will provide an overview and definitions of misinformation and disinformation. Susan Dawson-O'Brien, an adjunct instructor of journalism and media communications, and student media coordinator at Johnson County (Kan.) Community College, will discuss the challenges of misinformed students in academia.
The presentation will cover various tools and techniques for combating misinformation, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between academia and professional journalism. These strategies include:
1. Critical thinking and literacy: Encouraging critical thinking skills among students and journalists to evaluate sources effectively. 2. Fact-checking platforms: Utilizing existing fact-checking platforms like Snopes, FactCheck.org, or PolitiFact to verify the accuracy of information. 3. Media literacy education: Incorporating comprehensive media literacy courses in educational curricula to teach students to analyze media content critically. 4. Collaborative networks: Establishing partnerships between academic institutions, media organizations, and fact-checking networks to collaborate on projects that promote truth-telling and provide resources for combating misinformation. 5. Scholarly and peer-reviewed resources: Emphasizing the use of scholarly and peer-reviewed sources in academic research to support claims. 6. Digital tools for verification: Using digital tools like reverse image search or tools that verify the authenticity of documents to verify the authenticity of visuals and documents. 7. Transparency and accountability: Encouraging transparency in both academic research and journalistic reporting, implementing rigorous standards for transparency, and ensuring clear attribution of sources and accountability for errors. 8. Public engagement and education: Organizing public events and workshops to educate the public about the dangers of misinformation and how to identify it, as well as leveraging social media platforms to disseminate accurate information and counter misinformation proactively.
