Volta Region Set to Become Ghana's Next Agribusiness Hub
The Volta Region in Ghana is poised to become a major agribusiness hub, thanks to its rich resources and supportive policies. The Regional Representative of the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC) highlights the potential of strategic coordination and targeted investment to create jobs, industries, and inclusive growth in the region.
The region's diverse agro-ecological zones, fertile lands, and abundant water resources make it ideal for crops like cassava, maize, rice, and vegetables, as well as aquaculture and coconut production. However, to fully realise these opportunities, the region needs improved infrastructure, including rural roads, electricity, irrigation, and digital connectivity.
To boost production and market access, training in food processing and agribusiness management is essential. Blended finance, including concessional financing and grants, can support well-structured agribusiness value chains in the region. Local banks should expand agricultural lending through guarantee schemes and regional risk-sharing facilities, with district assemblies providing data and investor coordination.
Strategic priorities include establishing District Agribusiness Hubs (DAHs) to link production, processing, logistics, finance, and exports in the region. Preparing bankable value-chain projects and empowering mechanisation and technology will also drive growth. The stable policy environment in Volta makes it a cost-effective base for national and regional agribusiness operations.
With the right investments and coordination, Volta can become Ghana's next agribusiness growth hub, creating sustainable jobs and thriving industries in the region. This will not only yield commercial returns but also strengthen Ghana's resilience and contribute to Africa's growth. By harnessing its resources and strategic advantages, Volta can transform its agribusiness sector and secure a prosperous future in the region.
