Volunteers Needed: 'Professional Mentors' Project Supports Young People in Finding Apprenticeships
The 'Professional Mentors' project, active since 2008, is seeking more volunteers from the city and the organization to mentor young people starting their working lives. The project supports young people, often with migration or refugee backgrounds, in finding jobs by passing on professional knowledge and life experience. Interested parties can contact coordinator Brigitte Vogler at 0561-1003 1275 or via email at [email protected]
Currently, 21 young people are being mentored, most of whom are in apprenticeships, with some still seeking one. The project includes job interview training in seven schools, providing honest feedback and tips to participants. Carina Wetekam, a 10th grader at Gustav-Heinemann-Realschule, is having her first job interview. Bernhard Boss and Ernst Blömeke, professional mentors with decades of experience, are conducting the interview. The mentors observe the candidate's demeanor and understanding of the job profile during the interview. Two mentees have completed their jobs as IT clerks and housekeepers, and one has gone on to university with the support of the project.
The 'Professional Mentors' project is looking for more volunteers to support young people in their transition from school to work. With 21 current mentees, the project is making a significant impact. The volunteers, who mentor individually with mentees from mid-second secondary school class up to the age of 25, are crucial to the project's success.
