Workshop of Archimedes: Furniture Incorporating Carbon Concrete Innovation

The Archimedean Sandbox, a beloved attraction in Aachen's summer calendar, will remain open to the public until August 19. This year's theme for the workshop, "Sustainable building - with concrete or better?", has seen children and teenagers creating city furniture from carbon concrete.

Hosted by RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen's Department of Design, the workshop has been a fixture in the sandbox for ten years. On August 1, the workshop will culminate in a presentation of the self-built city furniture, followed by the Archimedean Party.

Aachener DJ Chris Brid will provide music at the sandbox from 4 pm to 10 pm on August 1. The party, which runs from 2 pm to 10 pm, will give participants a chance to put the final touches on their works before the presentation.

The Archimedean Sandbox and Workshop are formats of Future Lab Aachen, an alliance of several Aachen institutions since 2016. The holiday games, of which the Archimedean Workshop is a part, have been taken over by Aylin Can and Birgit Frank.

Next year, Elena Reinders from the Department of Communication and City Marketing of the City of Aachen predicts that the workshop will be oriented towards the equestrian world championships and the accompanying programme in Aachen.

Visitors are invited to participate in discussions and activities, including a "Speed Debating" open discussion on future topics at 3 pm. Children can also create concrete refrigerator magnets and mini artworks under expert guidance from 2:30 pm.

STAWAG, a partner of the sandbox from the beginning, will be involved again next year. The Archimedean Sandbox and Workshop are open to all visitors and are not the only attractions: digging, relaxing, and enjoying the sun are still possible until August 19.

Unfortunately, there is no verified information available about the 2022 anniversary celebration or planned activities for the party. For more detailed historical and thematic information from 2022, it is recommended to access more specialized local event archives or the official Archimedian Workshop communication channels.

[1] Note: The only related result found mentions an Archimedean sandbox project named "Archimedische Sandkasten" located between the Rathaus and Dom in Aachen in 2025, associated with Future Lab Aachen, but it does not provide historical or event details from 2022.

The Archimedean Workshop, a decade-long fixture under the guidance of RWTH Aachen and FH Aachen's Department of Design, introduces topics such as education-and-self-development and science, like their latest theme on sustainable building methods. In August, participants can showcase their self-built city furniture and even engage in speed debates on future topics.

Amid the various attractions at the Archimedean Sandbox, visitors can participate in technology-oriented activities, such as creating mini artworks or concrete refrigerator magnets with expert guidance.
