Breaking News: Chemnitz Initiative "(K)Einheit" Snags Young Talent Award at the Karl-Wilhelm-Fricke Prize 2025
Young enterprise initiative "K) Unity" awarded Karl-Wilhelm-Fricke Prize 2025
Berlin/Chemnitz, June 13th, 2025 - Last night's prestigious award ceremony for the Karl-Wilhelm-Fricke Prize 2025 at the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship saw a triumph for the rising stars of Chemnitz - the Chemnitz Initiative "(K)Einheit". This dynamic team took home the Young Talent Award for a remarkable five-part film series, profiling young Eastern Germans engaged in personal conversations about identity, memory culture, and societal impact.
This project is more than just a creative endeavor; it serves as a catalyst for workshops, discussions, and film forums, fostering dialogue about the past and the present. The jury was particularly impressed by the selfless dedication of the team, as they work tirelessly to bring the post-wall generation together, bolster their contributions to public discourse, and invigorate inter-generational dialogue.
The prize not only recognizes their past efforts, but it also paves the way for future development of the project.
Jeannette Gusko, an author, speaker, and spokesperson for the network "3rd Generation East," graced the event with a stirring laudation. She highlighted the timeliness of the initiative, as many of us seek new perspectives and narratives that offer clarity, conviction, and direction in these tumultuous times, 35 years post-reunification.
Established in 2017 through the philanthropy of physician, author, and former refugee helper Dr. Burkhart Veigel, the Karl-Wilhelm-Fricke Prize annually honors outstanding commitment to freedom, democracy, and civil courage. The jury, presided over by former Federal Commissioner for the Stasi Records Marianne Birthler, includes other luminaries like the human rights activist Prof. Dr. Irina Scherbakova, writer Marko Martin, Dr. Burkhart Veigel himself, and the director of the Federal Foundation for Reappraisal Dr. Anna Kaminsky.
